Roughly 65 million years ago, powerful volcanic activity coated the region in thick lava flows. As the lava cooled, it solidified into basalt, capping the mountains with broad, flat plateaus that rise above the surrounding valleys. Over time, wind, water, and ice wore away the softer rock below, leaving behind the rugged mesas that define the area today.
 

The last Ice Age added its own touch, as glaciers carved deep U-shaped valleys and alpine basins into the terrain. Today, these glacial remnants form pristine high-altitude lakes and lush meadows—ideal for hiking, fishing, and taking in the serene beauty of the wilderness.
