Raton, NM ➡️ Pagosa Springs, CO
Approx. 230 miles | Scenic overload: HIGH
Day 4 of our two-wheeled adventure started crisp and cool in Raton, New Mexico—a perfect 55°F morning for the start of a long and twisty ride. But as any rider knows, the road often has a surprise or two waiting...

🦅 Bird Strike on NM-64
Heading west on NM 64 toward Cimarron, a massive black bird launched from roadkill right into my path. I ducked instinctively, but it still slammed into the top of my HJC helmet with a loud thud. Mark, riding behind me, said it shot straight up in the air about 10 feet before crashing back down—deader than a doornail. Talk about a wild start to the day!
☕️ Coffee with a View in Red River
We passed through Eagle Nest, then made a quick coffee stop at Steam Coffee in the alpine village of Red River. Great vibes, smooth coffee, and gorgeous scenery—it hit the spot.

🌯 Burrito Heaven at Michael’s in Taos
Riding into Taos was a bit tricky—we had to detour around a local parade—but it was totally worth it for brunch at the legendary Michael’s Kitchen. I had the red chile-smothered breakfast burrito, and it was everything you'd expect from a New Mexico staple. Spicy, flavorful, and exactly what a road-weary rider craves.

🌀 Earthships, Gorges, and Greatness
After Taos, the ride along NM 64 kept delivering. We cruised past the jaw-dropping Rio Grande Gorge and the quirky, off-grid Earthship Biotecture community. It's like riding through a sci-fi movie set with a sustainability twist.
Next came Tres Piedras and one of my all-time favorite stretches of motorcycle road—from there to Tierra Amarilla and into Chama. This route is packed with elevation changes, sweeping curves, and scenic glory. If you’ve never done it, add it to your bucket list.
🏁 Crossing into Colorado: Pagosa Springs
After a short break in Chama, we crossed into Colorado and rolled into Pagosa Springs—our stop for the night. We’re staying at the charming River Walk Inn, just steps from the river and close to downtown.

🍻 Dinner was at Riff Raff Brewing—excellent beer, hearty food, and a great way to wrap up a day packed with everything that makes motorcycle touring unforgettable.

Tomorrow: Colorado Calling
We’re not done yet—tomorrow promises even more mountain magic as we continue exploring the best roads the Rockies have to offer.
Stay tuned for Day 5!
