This beginner-friendly New Mexico overland tour delivers classic Wild West scenery, wide-open spaces, and real frontier history. Starting in Artesia, NM, we head into the backcountry through remote landscapes once traveled by Billy the Kid, where desert vistas stretch for miles, wild horses roam, and small towns feel frozen in time. It’s an ideal introduction to overland travel with big scenery and manageable terrain.
As the route gains elevation, the landscape transitions into cooler mountain forests near Cloudcroft before continuing through scenic roads in the Gila National Forest. Expect relaxed pacing, accessible trails for high-clearance 4WD vehicles, abundant dispersed camping, and highlights like Chloride Canyon and the high mountain meadows and aspen groves north of Abiquiu.
This tour is designed to build confidence while showcasing the best of New Mexico’s backcountry, without technical difficulty.
